I bought these collars to deter my 2 dogs from having a barking contest with the neighbor's dogs at our fence. I have 2 minature schnauzers with relatively short hair. Right out of the box the batteries were dead or weak. A trip to the local hardware store for new batteries fixed the first problem. The first time I put on the collars they didn't seem to work. I then made sure they were on fairly snug and that seemed to solve that problem. When they say one finger underneath the collar they mean it. The first time my dogs barked after all the adjustments.....they did get shocked. They both yelped and ran away. I think it was the scare factor at work here. It seemed putting the collars on made them think twice about going to the neighbor side of our yard. But eventually the temptation to run and charge the fence barking became too great and they just learned to ignore the shocks and continue to bark away at our neighbor's dogs. (The collar's little LED light was flashing, so I assume they were delivering the shocks.) I think they worked at first but eventually the "scare" factor wore off on them and the collars didn't seem to deter them very well.

The BC-50B does NOT come with a set of long probes for those of us with long haired dogs.

I bought this because it was inexpensive. You get what you pay for. The battery that came with it was dead in two days. The unit was dead in about two weeks. It'll get sent back for a refund.

I have tried everything and while at the puppy park someone mentioned that he finally broke down and bought a collar and couldn't believe how quickly it worked. Well 6 months later, I too finally broke down and bought this collar. It was a last resort, I tried everything to no avail. I put the battery in and checked it first on myself; then removed the battery to restart it at the lowest level and put it on my dog. I had to bring in the groceries and the first time I opened and closed the door behind me, he barked twice and then let out a little yelp. I had to make several trips and after that first one no more barking. I'm glad he's a quick learner. He was barking at the wind, anyone coming or going in the apartment complex at all hours. Today it's really windy and he barked once that was it. Now I wish I would've bought the collar earlier; less stress on me and I feel like I have more time spent with him in a "good" manner.
I'd like to thank all the people that wrote reviews to help me decide what type of collar to get.

I had a Husky who would howl every night until he fell asleep then start again at sunrise. Couldn't risk leaving him cause of neighbours. Put the collar on, what a difference. At first I was worried cause of the length of his hair, but the default prongs worked, just make sure it's tight enough so it won't move around their neck.
He started howling as normal once it was on then he stopped suddenly. A few more times and he was quiet for good. He tried howling as the sun rose and yelped like he'd been nipped by another dog. He hasn't howled since. When it's off, he behaves as normal, happy and playful and when it's on he is a little subdued but nothing major.
Highly recommend this product.
