Amazon.com Review
LitterMaid LM900 self-cleaning cat litter box works best with premium clay based cat litter. Your cat must be in front of the sensor for 5 seconds then it will automatically cycle 10 minutes after your cat leaves the litter box, raking the waste into a disposable container, where it and odors are sealed away.Ideal for a household with a large cat or more than one cat, this big, self-cleaning litter box eliminates most odors while keeping the litter pleasingly fresh for tabby. It's ingenious in design: a cat entering the box triggers a sensor; the sensor sets a timer that counts off 10 minutes; then a rake runs through the litter, scooping out clumps and depositing them in a plastic container at the box's end; the container is automatically sealed until the next cat visit, when the raking cycle opens the container for another deposit. (Twelve reusable, disposable containers are included, each 13 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches deep.) The litter box can be plugged into a wall socket (AC adapter included) or operated on eight D-cell batteries (not included). It comes with a durable carpeted ramp that leads a cat into the box and cleans its paws on the way out. For safety, the rake stops and reverses at the slightest touch if an object gets in the way. If a cat re-enters the box before the initial 10 minutes have elapsed, the timer automatically resets. The litter box is made of hard plastic and measures 29 inches long, 8-7/8 inches high, and 16-3/4 inches wide. For proper operation, it requires premium, clumping litter but does not need as much as a nonautomated litter box of the same size. For cleaning, the litter tray can be detached. Instructions for acclimating a cat to the box are included. --Fred Brack

I travel for business a lot which leaves my husband David to take care of litter box duty for my very big kitty Tanner when I'm away. This is NOT his cup of tea but he's been tolerant. Feeling sorry for David, I ordered the original model based on reviews for self cleaning litter boxes. I placed the new box near his regular box for a couple of weeks and he ignored it. However, on one of my longer trips I came home to find he was using both so I took the regular box away and he's doing great using just the Littermaid now. My husband likes this so much better to say the least since he only empties the reservoir every third day or so.
Tanner is the original scaredy cat and hides when I bring out suitcases, rattle plastic bags and the vacuum absolutely terrifies him so I was concerned about the noise of the motor. No problem. It's delayed enough that he's unfazed.
We did find the level of litter is very important. Too much and it continues to cycle trying to rake the full area but is blocked by too much litter. Bottom line--we like this a lot. I should have bought it much sooner.

I have gone through 2 of these in 5 years. NEVER again will I purchase a a Littermaid. This model died Monday after 2-1/2 years, but had been having problems with the rake running continuously until it finally cut off. The cord finally snapped on Monday. Not only the short lifespan considering the price, but I found myself spending nearly as much time cleaning the box as I did a regular old litter pan. No matter what litter brand I tried, it adhered like mud to the bottom of the pan, would stick to the rake, and eventually cause the machine to cut off.
Just purchased an Omega Paws, which has very good reviews and am eagerly awaiting its arrival today so the Littermaid can get tossed.
Good idea, very poor longterm performance.

I have two of these litter boxes and I am pretty pleased with them. I never had any problems with them and they do their job. It's much better then having to scoop out the clumps myself. I use Arm and Hammer litter and it works just fine.
I also keep the litter box in a big under the bed container this way all the litter that spills out stays in the container. Then when I empty the litter box and clean it I just dump the litter out that has collected in the container. It's much neater that way so the litter stays in one spot and doesn't go all over the floor. I also line the containers with small plastic garbage bags this way I can get more use out of the containers since they are expensive. Once the container gets cracked then I just replace it.
I also recommend buying the permanent plastic lid. I have it on both litterboxes and it works great. This way the lid never falls off since I always had a problem with that. Every once in awhile all I have to do is wipe it down since some stuff sticks to it. I just use a clorox wipe and it does a good job.
One last thing I recommend is to use a Silicone spray. I spray the rakes and the bottom and let it dry. Then when it's dry I fill the litter box with the cat litter. This helps since the stuff doesn't stick to the bottom.

My children saved up their allowance they earned by cleaning the litter box in the house to buy this one. They were very tired of the chore of cleaning the litter box in living area every other day for 3 cats. This automatic litter box replaced the litter pan in the living area since the smell would carry across the house. The new LitterMaid LM900 Mega definitely benefited the living area. The smell only carries a few minutes until the poop is scooped in the pan. The drawbacks include: the lid of the pan occasionally gets caught on the opening of the tent so it won't close again, the spreader stops and restarts repeatedly whenever there is a large clump of litter that it can't push out of the way, and the spreader pushes the litter towards the pan when it cleans but doesn't spread the litter sufficiently on it's return causing unevenness in the litter. The benefits are there is very little scooping that needs to be done other than touch ups to clean the spreader and small clumps in the litter as well as dumping the pan occasionally and evening out the litter. Even with the downfalls, they don't regret the purchase.

I bought this litter box 7 months ago and it quit working this morning. For $100+ bucks it should last longer 7 months!!! Before it broke, it always seemed to leak a lot of litter out of the bottom and it didn't have enough power to clean urine spots. It would get stuck and you would have to clean it manually anyway. It's kinda loud and feces stick to the plastic prongs after it's done cleaning and continue to stink until you unattach it and wash it. It's gross. All that aside Im most ticked off that it broke (not sure if the motor gave out or what) after only 7 months. Talk about a rip off!
