The PetSafe Wireless Fence pet containment system is a revolutionary concept that provides the safest, simplest form of pet containment ever. Plug in the transmitter somewhere inconspicuous in your home. The transmitter emits a 17.5 kHz radio signal around your home. Your pet wears a lightweight receiver collar that "listens" for the signal. While the collar is receiving the signal, your dog is free to run and play in your yard. When he approaches the boundary of the signal area, he receives a warning beep. If your dog does not return, he receives a static correction which is startling but not harmful. With a little simple training, your dog will quickly learn his boundaries. The training of your pet is a key element with the PetSafe Wireless Fence. Follow the easy instruction and training manual that is included.

Like others have said, the biggest problem is that the collars deliver shocks randomly, for no reason at all even when the collar is 10' from the sending unit!
After fighting this for 4 years I regret not returning it immediately. We have returned several units for "repair", and actually ended up running two antennas hoping to solve the problem. I have lost track of how many collars we have bought or had replaced for our 2 dogs. Several.
The company's explanation was quite varied, sometimes amusing, but always my fault: I had the antenna in the garage (too cold or too hot), I had it against a wall in the house (can't be near metal or electrical fields and surprise! I have nails and wiring in my walls!) Did we have cordless phones or a wireless network (both big no-no's!)Garage door openers, television sets, radio interference, power surges, etc, etc and etc.
Was even told collars were not to be worn indoors. They need to read their own literature where it explains how you can set up inside boundaries. I guess when you bring the dog inside you are supposed to take the collar off and leave it outside? Not a bad idea actually because the thing goes off just siting on the table next to the antenna! Watch Fido jump !
Since they go off randomly the batteries wear out quick. They figured how to make the product even more annoying by changing to a battery you have to buy from them. You can't go to the store anymore and buy a CR2032 battery for $2. Nope, that was too easy.
Collar units fall apart. The correction boundary changes minute-to-minute. Good luck trying to use 2 collars on two dogs, they will never have the same perimeter. But again the ABSOLUTE WORST part of the system is the trauma it does to your pets when they receive shocks for no reason at all when they are only a few feet from the antenna.
If you want to turn your dog into a psychotic and paranoid bundle of nerves that is afraid to go outside, and if you get a kick out of watching your pet get zapped for no reason a couple times a day this is the product for you.

I didn't know what to expect when I ordered this product, but based upon other reviews, I hoped for a positive product. I can't be more pleased. It sets up in minutes. The radiowave machine makes no noise (I wasn't sure what to expect). It is a trial/error type of figuring out the distances. I tried first about 70ft diameter, but found that was too much to keep my whippet/greyhound from jumping the side fence to the neighbor's yard. I then moved it to 45ft diameter. Before putting the collar on the dog, I walked with the collar close to my ear and placed the white flags when I first heard the warning buzzing. I then walked the dog w/o the collar on to each flag and said a loud NO! After putting on the collar, I had the dog follow me throughout the backyard - she would not even go close to the flags -- and I DID NOAT coax her to cross them either - it is about PREVENTING - if the dog should jump the fence, it may be afraid to return because of the shock, so be careful!!! Praising her for staying away from the flags was important. Now she only goes so far in the yard. No more fence jumping. I will remove the flags in a month or two. I have the collar set on 4! But But be careful to REMOVE the collar before you take the dog in the car somewhere. I forgot, luckily didn't get out of the garage before the dog started to get excited. I knew immediately and took off the collar and put on her other hiking collar. Whew! No zapping! One issue, tho, is that the waves don't seem to go through my metal shed on the side of the house, but it is OK because the waves pick up on the other side of it should the dog get that far. Great product!!!

I was a little nervous about spending this much on a system I was not sure would work with my dog. But we followed the training instructions (actually extended the training time by a week before we turned on the "juice"), and it has worked beautifully on our 10 acre parcel.
I agree with the reviews that note the moving boundaries, so we concentrated more on the beep from the collar than the white warning flags. They seem to be a good rule of thumb for my dog on a calm day, but if it's windy out the borders move. She responds to the beep with the collar set at level 2 for static shock.
After having the system a few months, we put it to the true test, and let her play outside with the neighbor's dog. When the boundary was reached, she turned and re-entered the safe zone, even if her pal was running outside it. They now happily play within the zone, and she does not mind having the collar put on her (we take it off inside the house)at the door.
My advice is to give your dog the time they need to get used to the concept of beeping/run to the door if you have a moving boundary issue, and it won't matter that it moves, unless you live on a small parcel.
My only negative is that I do wish this system did not use a proprietary battery.

Our dog, without fail, would run to the neighbors' yards, driveways, and into the street. Once the correction phase began he became a new pet. Fantastic product!

I highly recommend this appliance, hands down. I should have come on earlier with this...moved to the Northeast, Labs nor I familiar with porcupines. In the first month, we had two trips to the vet- emergency wise. Very expensive, painful, and the injuries do not make the dogs retreat, but retaliate...every chance they got.
Invested in this little wondrous machine and by golly, it works like a miracle. It only took 1 week to train, although that might be stretching it....meaning, in a few days the dogs were quite secure and safe in their boundary area and learned not too painfully quick- to avoid the boundary line. My dogs are big chocolate Labs who were use to roaming free in the backwoods and on the backroads of the Midwest. For their own protection, this system beats fencing, chaining- it virtually allows them the freedom they need with the safety required for them to live a long satisfying life. As an owner, I am ever thankful such a product exists that protects my friends/dogs.
(Please note: The fence does not keep porcupines out, but!!! The dogs stand at their boundaries barking and carrying on with the prickly pigs in sight and the porcupine takes that as a no trespassing sign and has not entered...yet.)
