The Safeway Gate is rated number one for the top of the stairs by a leading independent consumer organization. Constructed of sturdy, tubular steel with a non-toxic coating, it mounts permanently for added safety. It's easy to install and easy to remove, and the one-hand operation makes it easy to use, too. An exclusive, easily adjustable feature prevents the gate from swinging open over the stairs. It fits openings from 24.75" to 43.5" wide, and also works with most railings and angled walls. Measures 30.5 inches high.

"Firm, Sturdy Gate" 2010-03-26
By Priscilla Z. Lumbra (Athens, GA USA)
This gate is used at the top of our stairs so our 19 month old won't attempt to walk down on his own. So far it has been efective in that but it was time consuming to install it. One time since then I opened it up and the actual gate poped off, I placed it back on it's hinges and haven't had an issue.

"Top-notch, durable gate--used for 5 1/2 years" 2010-03-14
By Odyssey Coach (Chantilly, VA)
This gate was a champ. Survived two kids and daily opening and closing. Just took it down today because our youngest is now quite capable on the stairs. It does take a little time to install, but I think most attached gates would. You have to align everything. It does have a template to help with that process. Also, the latch is too tricky for a smart toddler (aren't they all clever) to figure out. Impressed with quality of materials, durability.

"Bare bones" 2010-03-08

I can understand making the banister mount an optional kit (k12), but I don't understand why they made the drywall installation kit (k100) optional. After getting the banister piece mounted, I found that I had to drive back to the store to get the drywall kit. Big pain.

Because this required 3 separate kits, I had to juggle 3 separate sets of instructions to put this together. The instruction manual for the gate itself could use some work, as the text for the instructions and the images that went with the instructions were at different parts of the manual. I ended up ripping out the 10 or so pages of intervening Spanish and French instructions so that it would be easier to flip back and forth between the text and the images.

Also, the templates might have been more useful if the screw hole spacing on the template matched the actual spacing of the screw holes on the hinges. In one case the spacing on the template was roughly 1/8 inch (3mm) wider (or was it narrower?) than the hinge.

"Great Gate!" 2010-03-06
By S. Johnson Boyce (Menomonee Falls, Wi)
My husband and I purchase this gate to keep our four dogs from the upstairs area. We had been using a baby gate propted between the spindles of the lower part of the stairs. Not only did the wood take a beating, but one of labs found out he could nudge it open with his nose. Needness to say this new gate is "great". It now is permenantly attached at the top of the stairs. Visitors can't easily see it and it very easy to use with one hand. My husband did the installation and with a little strip of wood was able to account for the difference in the measurements on the staircase.

"Best. Baby Gate. Ever." 2010-01-24
By Christopher Asbach (Fremont, NE USA)
My parents have used this gate above their stairs for the last 3 years while watching our son. We recently bought a new house with an open stairwell into the basement so we wanted to buy the exact same baby gate. Both baby gates work great and the hardware is very easy to install and adjust. The metal construction is key to it's safety and the white finish should go with your surrounding decor. The plastic mounting that one reviewer referred to as cheap is actually very strong. The metal gate has posts that slide into place on the thick plastic mountings that are screwed into the wall. It would take an extreme amount of force to shatter the hard plastic entirely and free the gate from the mounting. Also you can set this gate to open in only one direction, either direction is fine, or you can let it open in both directions if you aren't installing it directly above the landing.
